Play: Baltimore Orioles
Rating: 8*
The Baltimore Orioles are leading the race for the second AL wild card and they're just two games back of Toronto for the top spot in the AL East. They've shut out the New York Yankees in back-to-back wins here at Camden Yards, and I expect another Orioles win against their division rival Sunday afternoon.
Left-hander Wade Miley (8-11, 5.43) takes the ball for Baltimore. He's posted an atrocious 7.14 ERA in six starts with the club, but he struck out nine through seven innings while holding the Jays to three runs on five hits his last time out. The Yankees have a very mediocre batting average against southpaws this season and their recent scoring woes must be encouraging for Miley.
Michael Pineda (6-11, 5.12 ERA) takes the ball for the Bronx Bombers. The 27 year old right-hander has been tagged with five runs on seven hits in each of his last two starts. He's 2-7 with a 5.55 ERA in 13 road starts on the season and we can note that the Orioles are 4-1 in their last five games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.
Starting pitching is important, but I would call it a wash and give the Orioles the advantage in virtually every other aspect of the game. Good price on the Birds in this contest.
