This is a 10* BOOKIEKILLER on the Cardinals.
St. Louis is currently three games back in the Wildcard hunt, but it has to be liking its chances here in the opener of this three-game interleague home series with the Rays, who face an uphill battle by sitting five games back.
Lots of MLB still to go, and for sure anything can happen, but the bottom line here for this pick is that I feel it's a complete mismatch on the mound between these starters, and that swings the value to the undervalued home side and Sonny Gray in my opinion.
Gray (10-6, 3.72 ERA, 1.09 WHIP), is coming off an unfortunate "no-decision" vs. the Cubs on Thursday after allowing two runs and striking out nine over seven innings.
The visitors counter with Jeffrey Springs (0-0, 4.91, 1.91), who made his MLB debut in his last outing after getting Tommy John Surgery back in 2023, allowing two runs off six hits over three innings. Springs is a work in progress and I think he's in well over his head in this matchup, as we can expect him to "get the hook" early in this one.
All things considered, I feel this line could or should in fact be a lot larger. Lay the price, the play is ST. LOUIS.
