This is an 8* SITUATIONAL TOP TOTAL on the OVER between the St. Louis Blues and the Florida Panthers.

We don't subscribe to any one single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Motivation: The Blues are 30-17-9 so far this season, not because of their offense though, but because of great goaltending and defensive play. Most recently St. Louis is coming off a 2-1 shootout loss to Winnipeg. There's no question that the visitors will be looking to open things up today and they'll have to in facing one of the league's most prolific offenses: "You have to work, you have to compete when you have the puck and not be discouraged because you're getting checked," St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said after the setback to the Jets. "There's a reason why we're scoring just one goal." Note that St. Louis will also be especially motivated to avenge a 3-1 setback to the Panthers at home on December 1st.

Getting healthier: St. Louis is expected to get a bit boost on the offensive end today with the return of Jaden Schwartz, he was third on the team with 28 goals and 63 points last year, but has missed 49 games after a broken ankle: "When he's up to speed, he brings instant, quick offense that's hard to find," Hitchcock confirmed. "He's a hungry scorer."

Dominant offensive play: Florida has posted 34 goals over a 6-1-1 stretch, most recently annihilating Buffalo 7-4 on Tuesday.

Shoddy defensive play: As good as the Panthers offense has been, is as poor as the defense has been, they'd surrender two power-play goals in four chances to the Sabres and have killed just 14 of 20 short-handed situations over their last four games. And that's good news for the Blues, as their power play has suddenly come to life, going 4 of 9 over the last two games. Note that Florida goaltender Roberto Luongo has allowed three goals or more in three straight starts.

The bottom line: Two hungry teams collide on Friday night and all signs do indeed point to a higher-scoring shootout, play on the OVER.
