This is a 10* RED DRAGON on the UNDER between the Nashville Predators and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

We don't subscribe to any one single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions, are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Motivation: The Lightning return home after a dismal road trip, they'd lose 5-1 in Ottawa on Monday and then 4-2 in Montreal on Tuesday. The nine goals allowed over two games matched a team-high: "We were leaky tonight," Bolts coach Jon Cooper said last night. "When you're a little bit leaky, you're not getting the bounces you were getting in the past and we definitely have to tighten that up. It's been a little bit alarming. We're not going to panic over 48 hours. This is a humbling league. You can't get comfortable at any time. There's no panic mode for us." Tampa will be especially motivated to shore things up on the defensive end tonight as it's lost seven of eight in this series, including four straight (last game was a 5-4 shootout loss on October 20th).

Stumbling super star: Lightning star Steven Stamkos has scored just once in his last ten games.

Getting back to basics: Like the Lightning, Nashville will be looking to improve on the defensive end of the ice tonight, the team would give up 13 goals in its last three games, including a 5-2 setback to Washington: "We made a couple of bad mistakes," coach Peter Laviolette said. "You can't leave opportunities that are coming across the crease, uncovered men. We need to do a better job in that area. There weren't a lot of them, but the ones that did happen, we need to do a better job."

ATS statistics: Note that Nashville has seen the total go UNDER the number in four of six this year after playing to three or more consecutive OVERs, while Tampa Bay has seen the total stay below the posted number in 13 of 21 in trying to revenge a loss vs. an opponent.

The bottom line: With both teams clearly putting an added emphasis on the defensive side of the ice, all signs do indeed point to the UNDER as the savvy move in this contest.
