A couple of capable pitchers go head to head tonight, but I think the number looks to be a little a little low in this situation. Philadelphia will send out A.J. Burnett (6.10, 4.15 ERA), who is coming off an ugly start where he allowed seven earned runs in just five innings of work against the Mets. Burnett has had his struggles on the road this season, posting a 3-6 record with a pedestrian 5.26 ERA. The Nationals counter with Jordan Zimmerman (6-5, 3.17 ERA), who has struggled in two straight starts before bouncing back with seven innings of two run ball in Miami. Note though that the right-hander is just 5-6 with a 3.82 ERA in 12 games started versus division rival Philadelphia. And note that five of the last six combined starts by these two starters have respectively seen the game total soar above the posted number. Yesterday we saw a pitching duel between Doug Fister and Roberto Hernandez in a 2-1 Phillies win, but I think the writing is on the wall and that all signs point to a higher-scoring slug-fest. The Nationals are the big favorites here but the edge won't be decided with the starting pitching; consider the OVER.
