The Detroit Red Wings may be looking good sitting second in the Atlantic Division, but the truth is that they have struggled of late. Detroit has won only two of its last seven games with all five losses coming in regulation. I think more pain is coming its way tonight as they're coming to Amalie Arena to do battle with the one team besting them in the division, the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Here are my keys to the game:
1. Goaltending - The Lightning currently wins this round on knockout. Ben Bishop is an extraordinary 23-5-1 behind a 2.07 GAA over 29 outings at Tampa for the season and has allowed only six goals over his last three games, despite facing the Bruins and a double meeting with the Canadiens. The Red Wings meanwhile have confirmed Jimmy Howard will get the nod in goal. The same Howard who was torched for seven goals at Philly his last time out and has lost four of his last five starts.
2. Previous Meetings - The Lightning have prevailed in both of the first two meetings of the season, winning 4-3 in a shootout at Detroit and most recently a dominant 5-1 victory in Tampa at the end of January.Their dominance in the series is no news as Tampa Bay has won six of the last seven meetings overall.
3. X-Factor - Detroit will miss its second-leading scorer Pavel Datsyuk due to a lower-body injury and their top goalscorer Tomas Tatar is goalless over his last eight games. That does not bode well coming up against a Lightning D that allows only 2.09 goals per game in its own building.
Selection: This is a play on the Tampa Bay Lightning (8*)
