The AL East leading New York Yankees may be coming off a three game sweep at Boston, but I think they're in for a disapponting evening Monday visiting the AL East worst Toronto Blue Jays for Game 1 of a three game set. The hosts have split their last six games despite swinging hot bats, and I expect plenty of run-support for their pitching staff tonight as well.
Here are my keys to the game:
1. Pitching - The Yankees will hand the ball to Chase Whitley (1-0, 1.80 ERA) who'll make his second start of the year. He gave up one run on six hits over five innings in a 4-2 win against the Rays in his season debut on April 28 but posted a 5.23 ERA over 24 outings (12 starts) last year. His ERA on the road was particularly high (5.83) and he was torched for 13 runs on 19 hits over just nine innings against the Blue Jays as Jose Bautista was 2-for-4 with a homer. The Blue Jays will counter with R.A. Dickey (0-3, 5.23 ERA) who's still looking for his first decision on the year. This should be a good spot for the veteran who conceded just one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings against the Yankees in his season debut and he was 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA over two starts against the Bronx Bombers last year.
2. The Jays' Offense - Toronto is leading the majors with its 144 runs scored on the year, 13 more than Oakland and San Diego that are tied for second. It has scored 22 runs over its last three games alone and it's only a matter of time before R.A. Dickey gets the same run-support as the other members of the pitching staff. Dickey has a run support average of 2.61 on the year while Mark Buehrle and Drew Hutchison both have received over 11 runs of support per game.
3. X-Factor - The Yankees' Carlos Beltran is on a three game hitting streak but has just five hits with five strikeouts over 26 at bats against Dickey over his career.
Selection: This is a play on the Toronto Blue Jays (10*)
