The Detroit Red Wings will host the Toronto Maple Leafs in their season opener on Friday night. The game will mark the return of former coach Mike Babcock, who is now the head coach for Toronto. The Red Wings are a 2-1 favorite here at home, but I have my eyes on the total as I expect to see a high scoring contest.
Here are my keys to the game:
1. Goaltending - Jimmy Howard will be between the pipes for Detroit, and he lost his job as the starter in last year's playoffs. The Leafs will likely turn to Jonathan Bernier, who was beaten twice in a 3-1 loss to Montreal in the Leafs season opener. While both goaltenders are capable, neither has a stranglehold on the #1 spot.
2. Previous History - These teams met here in Detroit for a pre-season game last Friday, and the Wings won that contest by a score of 4-2.
3. X-Factor - The Red Wings had the league's second best power play last season, converting on 23.8 percent of their man advantage opportunities.
Selection: This is a play on the Leafs@Wings to go OVER the total (7*)
