Result: Win
The set-up: After a three-day Christmas holiday break, the 22-8-5 Pittsburgh Penguins will travel to New Jersey to take on the 13-14-3 Devils. This Tuesday night game at Prudential Center will conclude a home-and-home set that began with a 4-1 Penguins win in Pittsburgh last Friday.
Pittsburgh: That victory helped the Penguins continue an impressive month of December, as Pittsburgh has recorded at least one point in all but one of the 12 games it has played this month(Penguins are 9-1-2 in December). That run includes a season-high seven-game winning streak from Dec. 1-Dec. 14. Sidney Crosby returned from a concussion at the start of the season leads the NHL with 24 goals while ranking third in scoring with 38 points in just 29 games played. Evgeni Malkin has 39 points on the season, second most in the NHL.Things are pretty well settled in the Steel City, as the Penguins announced a three-year contract extension for head coach Mike Sullivan, the day after Christmas. He has guided Pittsburgh to a 54-24-11 regular season record, and the 2016 Stanley Cup championship, since being named coach Dec. 12, 2015.
New Jersey: While the Pens are cruising, last Friday's 4-1 loss in Pittsburgh continued New Jersey's struggles this month. The Devils had snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 4-0 home-ice win over the Philadelphia Flyers last Thursday but with Friday's defeat, dropped them to just 3-7-2 in December. Goalie Cory Schneider isn't having a December to remember, as he's allowed at least four goals in six of his nine starts. "Sometimes it's good to get a mental break," Devils goaltender Cory Schneider said of the break in the schedule. "You can't forget about how it's been going or how we can do better; but I think it's also a good opportunity to take a step back, take a breath and assess where you are at, re-evaluate yourself individually, and hopefully come back with renewed energy and optimism."
The pick: This will be the third of five meetings this season between the Penguins and Devils, with Pittsburgh having won each of the first two. Is there any reason to expect a different result here? Schneider turned aside 35 of 39 shots on Friday to fall to 3-6-1 in his career versus the Penguins. Pittsburgh is an 8* play.
