Result: Win
The set-up: The 17-12-7 Toronto Maple Leafs will visit the 22-9-5 Washington Capitals tonight, with both teams trying to extend winning streaks. The Maple Leafs won their fifth straight game with a 5-4 overtime victory against the Detroit Red Wings in the Centennial Classic outdoors in Toronto on Sunday, while the Caps edged the Ottawa Senators 2-1 on Sunday, giving them a modest two in a row.
Toronto: Auston Matthews, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, moved into a tie for second in the league with 20 goals after scoring twice, including the overtime game-winner, in Sunday's outdoor Centennial Classic win. Only six NHL players have scored at least 46 goals in their rookie season but Matthews could if he maintains his current pace. Matthews suffered through a 13-game goalless drought but he's scored 14 times in his last 17 games. "He's just going to get better," Toronto head coach Mike Babcock said. "He's going to play with more pace. He's going to understand more. He's just going to get better." Connor Brown has three goals and four assists during the five-game winning streak. The Maple Leafs have also killed off all 22 penalties during the team's five-game winning streak.
Washington: Speaking of reaching the 46-goal mark as a rookie, the Caps' Alex Ovechkin was the last player to do so. Ovechkin has 28 points this season (17 goals) and is two points behind team leader Nicklas Backstrom (9 goals and 21 assists). However, defenseman Taylor Chorney doesn't see much ice time for Washington, he is proving to be a good-luck charm when he is in the lineup. Chorney delivered the game-winning goal against Ottawa with his first goal of the season and third career (in 130 games) as the Capitals improved to 6-0-1 in his seven appearances since Nov. 11.
The pick: The Maple Leafs are hot but the Caps are 13-5-1 at home, allowing 1.74 GPG. Holtby will be in the net tonight, with his 1.98 GAA and .929 save percentage. Make the Caps an 8* play.
