Total: 214.00 | -110.00 Under
Result: Loss
The set-up: Nearly 20,000 people packed the Mexico City Arena on Thursday night to watch the Suns fall to the Dallas Mavericks 113-108, in a game between two of the NBA's worst teams. However, Phoenix guard Devin Booker did provide a crowd-pleasing 39-point performance. Tonight, Mexican basketball fans will get treated to one of the NBA's best, as the 31-8 the San Antonio Spurs will be the Suns' opponent when Phoenix (just 12-27) "hosts" a second consecutive game in the nation's capital.
San Antonio: Only the 34-6 Warriors own a better record than the Spurs and San Antonio currently owns the NBA's best road record, at 17-3. The Spurs are coming off a 134-94 home rout of the Lakers on Thursday, with both the point total and margin of victory representing season highs. The Spurs had lost at home to Milwaukee on Tuesday and were looking for redemption against the Lakers."You always want to handle a loss by bouncing back the next night," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters after the game. "Our ball movement was great and everybody, both the first and second team, really were great tonight. I thought we had a good performance." The Spurs rank 2nd in points allowed (97.7 PPG) and while they rank 9th in points scored (106.7), they are arguably the league's most-efficient offensive team (Golden St. may argue). Anyway, the Spurs shoot 48.0 percent from the floor (2nd) but rank 1st in both three-point percentage (41.4%) and FT percentage (82.7%). Forwards Leonard (24.2 & 5.7) and Aldridge (17.6 & 7.2) are the team's best players but the team's quality of depth remains impressive, as seven player contribute between 6.3 to 12.2 PPG!
Phoenix: Booker scored 28 of his 39 points in the fourth quarter and went 9-of-11 from the floor in the period against the Mavs. He was 14-of-20 for the game, including 7-of-10 from three-point range. It was his fourth straight game scoring at least 22 points and he's shooting 55 percent from the floor in those games. He's averaging 19.8 PPG and along with Bledose (20.1-4.9-5.8), gives the Suns an impressive starting backcourt (Knight averages 12.2 off the bench). However, only small forward T.J. Warren (14.1) scores in double digits among frontcourt players.
The pick. Phoenix is a poor defensive team (ranks 29th in allowing 112.0 PPG) and the Spurs have scored 100 or more points in 16 straight games, their longest streak since 1995 (note: Kawhi Leonard has scored in double figures in 71 straight games). The Spurs also own nine straight wins over the Suns, with an average margin of victory of 19 points. San Antonio will want to give the international audience a 'show,' so the Over is a 10* play.
