The set-up: The Cards lost Monday's opener against the Brewers 7-5 in 10 innings but Tuesday's 2-1 victory evens the team's record at 13-13. The four-game home series continues for St. Louis against the Brewers tonight, who have now dropped six of their last 11 overall, to fall to 14-14. Milwaukee's slide began with three straight setbacks at home against the Cardinals from April 21-23. In contrast, after a 3-9 start to 2017, the Cards have won 10 of 14.
The pitching matchup: Chase Anderson (2-0 & 2.10 ERA) gets the ball for the Brewers, opposed by the Cards' Adam Wainwright (2-3 & 6.12 ERA). Anderson has pitched well, with a 1.07 WHIP and .215 opponents BAA to go along with his 2.10 ERA. However, the Brewers have lost all three of his no-decisions in 2017. He's had back luck against the Cards as well, as despite a 1.97 ERA in five starts against St. Louis, he's 0-2 and the Brewers are 0-5 (go figure!?). Wainwright snapped a three-game season-opening skid by striking out nine over five innings in a 6-3 victory at Milwaukee back on April 21st. He won again his last time out, despite allowing four ERs in 6 1/3 innings. He has not pitched well as his ERA indicates (see above), plus his 1.84 WHIP and .361 BAA against, also bode poorly.
The puck: However, Wainwright had his best outing of the season against the Brewers on April 21 and is now 15-8 versus Milwaukee in 29 career stars (2.25 ERA and the Cards are 20-9). Throw in Anderson's 1.97 ERA in five starts against St. Louis and the Under is an 8* play.
