Result: Loss
Money Line: -167.00 Houston (Home)
Result: Loss
The set-up: The Yankees opened the week in a funk, having lost 10 of their previous 12 games. They took two of the first three of a four-game series in Chicago against the White Sox, Mon-Wed, but missed a chance with a 4-3 loss last night to end a string of four straight series losses (Yanks settled for a 2-2 split), New York now travels to Houston to take on the team with MLB's best record (Astros are 54-26) for a three-game weekend series. The Yankees are 42-35, one game back of the Red Sox in the AL East. The Astros had a slight "mini-slump," going 4-8 from June 9 through June 18, but head into this series with eight wins in their last 10 games, extending their led in the AL West to a whopping 13 1/2 games.
The pitching matchup: Michael Pineda (7-4, 4.12) will take the mound in tonight's opener for New York and he will face Lance McCullers (7-1 & 2.53 ERA). Pineda pitched poorly vs. Texas in his last outing (7 ERs in 4 IP), making it three times in his last five in which he's allowed five-plus ERs in a start. However, prior to that, Pineda had a stretch in which he allowed three ERs or less in nine straight starts (Yanks were 8-1), since losing his 2017 season debut at Tampa Bay. Pineda took the loss against Houston on May 11, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings of a 3-2 setback. He is 2-3 with a 4.62 ERA in six career starts against the Astros (teams are 2-4). Lance McCullers is set to make his second start since returning from the 10-day disabled list last weekend. The Houston staff has been riddled with injuries and fighting through issues of his own, McCullers has been terrific. The team is 12-2 in his starts and his moneyline mark of plus-$984 ranks second among all starters. What's more, McCullers is 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA over two career starts against the Yankees, including a 5-1 victory at Yankee Stadium on May 12.
The pick: The Astros have maintained their grip on the best record in baseball despite their injuries and McCullers has been a beast. Houston comes in having won eight of 10, while the Yanks stumble in having lost 12 of 16. Make Houston an 8* play.
