The set-up: Seattle finally halted an eight-game home losing streak with Friday's 7-2 victory over Oakland. Nelson Cruz drove in five runs and hit the 300th HR of his career to lead the way. Both teams are far behind the Astros in the AL West but as I often note, at this point of the season, the AL wild card race remains reasonably open. Either team could sure use a two-game sweep over the weekend, with 42-46 Seattle trailing the second wild card spot by four games and 38-49 Oakland finding itself 7 1/2 games back.
The pitching matchup: Chris Smith (NR) of Oakland Athletics will be making one of the more unlikely starting debuts in major-league historv in tonight's contest, opposed by Seattle's Andrew Moore (1-1 & 3.60 ERA). Smith owns a 4.58 career ERA while seeing time with the Boston Red Sox (2008), Milwaukee Brewers (2009-10) and Athletics. He was released by the Seattle Mariners in 2011 and became a coach at UC Riverside (his alma mater), before later giving the sport another try and catching Oakland's attention during an independent league stint. Smith becomes the oldest starter in Athletics' franchise history at 36 years, 90 days. Moore is a rookie, making his third career start. He pitched eight innings while beating the Detroit Tigers 9-6 in his debut (June 22), then pitched seven innings while losing to the Kansas City Royals 3-1 in his second outing (July 3). Moore has allowed three ERs in each of his previous two starts.
The pick: Moore may be holding opponenst to a .204 BA but he's also given up three HRs in his 15 innings. As for Smith, it's quite a storybook adventure but Seattle has averaged 5.09 RPG at home and has had 11 hits in each of the first two games of this series. Neither bullpen is much of a help (Seattle's ERA is 4.28 and Oakland's 5.08!), so the Over is a 10* play.
