Result: Win
The set-up: Friday night CFB on ESPN comes from Albertsons Stadium (home of the famous "Blue Turf'), as the 2-1 Boise State Broncos host the 2-1 Virginia Cavaliers. The Cavs have opened the 2017 season with three consecutive home games, beating William & Mary 28-10, losing 34-17 to Indiana and then topping UConn, 38-18. The Broncos own home wins over Troy (24-13) and New Mexico (28-14), sandwiched around a 47-44 triple-OT loss at Washington State. The schools have only met once before, with Boise State crushing the Cavs 56-14 at Charlottesville in 2015. Virginia was just 4-8 taht season but fell to 2-10 last year, in Bronco Mendenhall's first season at Virginia.
Virginia: QB Kurt Benkert finished 30-of-40 for 455 yards (a school record!), three TDs and a pick in last week's Virginia win. He's completing 66.2% on the season with 976 passing yards (seven TDs and just one INT). He's accomplished all this without the help of a running game which is averaging only 106.0 YPG (111th) on 3.6 YPC. The defense comes in allowing a modest 20.7 PPG (49th) on 330.7 YPG (44th).
Boise State: The Broncos rebounded from that triple-overtime loss to Washington State with a 28-14 win over New Mexico. Senior Montell Cozart stepped into the starting QB role in place of Brett Rypien (injured?) and threw for two TDs while running for 71 yards and a third TD (he also had two passing TDs and 72 rushing yards and a TD in replacing Rypien against Wash. St.). Boise State has made the most of its 342.0 YPG (107th) by averaging 32.0 PPG (60th).
The pick: Rypien (undisclosed injury) had a streak of 25 consecutive starts snapped last week, a run that started when he threw for 321 yards and three TDs at Virginia two season ago. "He's practicing, he'll practice today and we'll see where he's at through practice," Broncos coach Bryan Harsin told reporters Monday. "He's back out there, threw some last week."Whether it's Rypien or Cozart, expect the Broncos to score here at home. However, Benkert's outstanding start makes me believe that Virginia can match Boise St. score for score. Overvalued Boise is just 11-28-1 its last 40 as a favorite and while I'm tempted to take the points with UVa, this is the Cavs first road game. I believe the Over is the better play. In fact, make it a 10*.
