Pirates (Brault) vs Cardinals (Wainwright)
The Pirates have struggled mightily lately, and especially on the road. They were swept by the Dodgers, but have bounced back to take the first two games against the Cards. Stephen Brault (0-3, 1.84) has spent most of the season in recovery but has been very sharp since his return. The Pirates have yet to reward his success on the mound with a win. He faces the near-immortal Adam Wainwright (11-7, 3.26) who at the age of 39 is pitching just about as well as he ever has. Two starts ago he held these same Pirates to 2 hits in a complete game shut-out.
Both of these team could be described as light hitting, The Pirates have probably the largest run differential in the game. They are 20-44 on the road, and 35 -51 vs righties. Their bullpen, which has been a thorn in the side most of the season has been better in their last 7 starts.
The Cardinals will likely be motivated after a pair of losses, have a decent home record and some success vs. left handed starters. Their relievers have been strong all year, but Wainwright can still deliver the innings.
The Cards are a large favorite, but I think this one will be closer than expected. I like the total here. Take the Pirates and Cards to go under today.
