This is a 10* TOTAL EXPRESS on the UNDER between the Orlando Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers.

We don't subscribe to any one single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Orlando fighting for a playoff spot: The Magic are just 4.5 games out of a playoff spot and made some moves over the break to try and help them get out of a rut which saw them back their way into the All Star game by dropping 16 of 20. Orlando would trade Tobias Harris for Ersan Ilyasova and Brandon Jennings and the move proved helpful as the duo would combine for 34 points in the Magic's 110-104 OT win over Dallas on Friday. Note though that both fell short by combining for 19 points in a 105-102 setback to Indiana on Sunday. Regardless, it's important to note that since allowing an average of 111.6 points over a 1-7 stretch, the Magic have allowed just 102.2 on 43.8 percent shooting over their last five (and note, they've been particularly sharp defensively of late, holding Dallas and Indiana to a combined 34.1 percent shooting mark in the fourth quarter).

Recent history: The last time these team's met, the lowly 76ers would walk away with a 96-87 victory on January 20th. Suffice it to say, we're expecting another similarly hard-fought and ultimately lower-scoring battle today as well.

ATS statistics: Note that Orlando has seen the total go UNDER the number in 12 of 19 this year after allowing 105 points or more, while despite suffering defensively for most of the year, Philadelphia has seen the total go UNDER the number in four of six this year after playing to three or more consecutive OVERs and in 16 of 30 after allowing 105 points or more.

The bottom line: With Orlando looking to avoid a "track meet" with the 76ers, all signs do indeed point to the UNDER as the savvy move in this contest.
