I favor a wager on the Southsiders to win straight-up on the road against an Angels that just endured a tough stretch of series against playoff contenders and division opponents. The White Sox won consecutive games against the A's in their last series and Monday's series opener — they will ride their momentum to a win on Tuesday.
Griffin Canning is coming off his worst outing of the year and has not improved since posting a 4.84 ERA in the first half, as his ERA has ballooned to 6.33 since the All-Star break. The right-hander also has a high walk ratio (4.31 BB/9), and nearly all of his batted balls are either hard-hit (41.1%) or medium-hit (47.9%) since the ASG break. His 5.56 ERA and .273 opponent BA in night games aren't stat lines encouraging, either.
Davis Martin forces a lot of ground balls (49.1% GB%) and has a better strikeout-walk ratio than Canning. He has a much lower hard-hit percentage (31.9%) than Canning in the second half, as well. With LA down a few key bats and a couple of others questionable with injuries, the home team's lineup will find it challenging to put runs on the board.
These bullpens are about even — the value is on the White Sox to win straight-up Tuesday in Anaheim.
