This is a 10* Pacific Division TOTAL OF THE YEAR on the UNDER between the San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks.

We don't subscribe to any single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Weird scheduling quirk: Vancouver is one spot behind the Sharks for the final playoff position in the division, but ten points separate the clubs. Vancouver needs to make up a bunch of ground quickly and has been given a unique opportunity to do that as the team's will play each other three times over the next seven days. In all, they'll play five teams in the final 22 games, with home-and-home sets Thursday and next Saturday. San Jose has won seven straight at Vancouver. It's going to be an all out war between these clubs over the next few months, but especially the next seven days and suffice it to say, we think this is going to lead to some classic, lower-scoring, grind-it-out "playoff atmosphere-like" affairs.

ATS statistics: Note that San Jose has seen the total go UNDER the number in 20 of its last 37 after scoring one goal or less in its previous game, while Vancouver has seen the total stay below the posted number in ten of 14 vs. division opponents this season.

The bottom line: We're going to call the goaltenders a wash. We think these teams will be looking to capitalize on mistakes, while doing everything they can to not make one of their own. All signs do indeed point to the UNDER as the savvy move in this contest.
