Result: Loss
The set-up: The 15-9 Marquette Golden Eagles will be in Washington D.C. for a 12 noon ET tip to play the 13-12 Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday. Marquette comes in 6-6 in Big Est play while Georgetown checks in at just 4-9.
Marquette: The Golden Eagles' leading scorer is guard Howard, who checks in at a modest 12.3 PPG but Marquette is an outstanding offensive team. It averages 82.9 PPG to rank 18th nationally and as a team shoots 48.8% from the floor (19th), including 42.2% on threes (3rd). In all, seven players average between 8.8 and 12.2 PPG, with six averaging in double figures. 6-11 center Luke Fischer (12.1 & 6.1) is the lone big man in that group, surrounded by six guards. Fisher began his career at Indiana but this is his third year with Marquette. He's currently just nine points and two rebounds shy of becoming the 20th player in school history with 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. Steve Wojciechowski has been the head coach since Fischer arrived but Marquette hasn't been an NCAA invitee in that span, although the team did win 20 games last year, after winning only 13 in Fischer's and Wojo's first season in Milwaukee.
Georgetwnn: John Thompson III continued the tradition set by his father at Georgetown, taking the Hoyas to eight NCAA berths in his first 11 years at the school. However, the Hoyas fell to 15-18 (7-11 in Big Est play) last year and are headed down that path again, this season! Guards Pryor (18.2 & 5.0) and Peak (16.4 & 4.0) are quality players but are the team's only double digit scorers. Georgetown features the 6-10 Govan (9.6 & 4.) plus the 7-0 Hayes (4.6 & 4.6) but combined, the duo hardly compares to Georgetown's long history of outstanding big men. The team scores 75.5 PPG and allows 71.6, so it's 13-12 record seems about right.
The pick:The Hoyas check in at just 8-6 SU and 3-9 ATS at home this season, continuing a trend from last season, as Georgetown is only 5-13 ATS in its last 18 home games. Inconsistency has plagued Marquette this season but the Golden Eagles are a much better team than Hoyas. Make Marquette a 10* play.
