This is a 10* TOTAL OF THE YEAR on the UNDER between the Nashville Predators and the Colorado Avalanche.

We don't subscribe to any single handicapping methodology, but instead feel that being flexible with ones approach is the best way to secure profits over the longterm. Sometimes we keep it simple, while other times we'll take into account a bunch of different factors, like motivation, scheduling and significant injuries. Recognizing classic "spot bets" is something we always do as well, IE: the "look ahead" spot, the "let down" spot and the "trap" game. The actual contestants on the field of play rarely enter into our equation when making selections, unless it's a Top 3 player like a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers etc. One set of criteria which we almost always use when making our decisions are Against The Spread (ATS) statistics. Sometimes these stats can be overrated and other times they help foreshadow the outcome of a contest.

This particular play is based on a few different factors:

Classic letdown spot: The Predators are rolling and are well on their way to the postseason after recently setting a franchise record point-streak. But note that their season-high five game win skein was halted in a 5-4 OT loss to New Jersey on Thursday. It's hard to gain momentum and once lost, it's even harder to regain that form. Suffice it to say, this one has all the makings of a classic letdown spot for the visitors today.

Avalanche goaltending: Semyon Varlamov hasn't been at his best of late, but he did make 34 saves in a 3-2 win in Nashville on December 12th and 19 in a 6-3 home victory over the Predators on January 8th (note that they'd hold the Preds to just 1 of 8 in the man advantage). If head coach Patrick Roy decides to sit Varlamov, he'll instead be going with the "hot hand," as backup Calvin Pickard is 3-1-0 with a 1.95 GAA over his last five appearances.

ATS statistics: Note that Nashville has seen the total go UNDER the number in five of its last seven after a loss following a five-game unbeaten streak, while Colorado has seen the total dip below the posted number in five of its last six in trying to revenge a loss vs. an opponent.

The bottom line: This one sets up as a "chess match" rather than a wide-open shoot-out. It has the air of a "playoff" game, make no mistake, this is an important game for both teams. All signs do indeed point to the UNDER as the savvy move in this contest.
