The game started as Carolina +3 and has come all the down to a pick-em in most sportsbooks. Quarterback play in the preseason means as much or more than in the regular season with many teams using inexperienced backups to play a great deal of time in the game. Carolina Panthers Coach Matt Rhule insists that it is an open and close competition between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold so expect both to get significant playing time in the game and try to impress. At QB for the Commanders is Carson Wentz who will likely not see a lot of playing time as the named starter. His backup Taylor Heinicke played decent last season but as the Wentz insurance policy, they probably don't want to put him at risk much either. Expect rookie Sam Howell to see a lot of action in this game and to struggle. The Commanders also just fired their defensive line coach during training camp and went from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defensive scheme so there are going to be mistakes as they learn the new system. I loved Carolina +3 (and so did a whole bunch of other bettors) I still really like them just to win the game - Take the Panthers on the Moneyline plus 100.
