I correctly picked Detroit to win both of its AL Wild Card games, winning consecutive plus-odds moneyline bets. The Astros weren't ready to deal with the hottest team in the sport, failing to match their competitive edge. That will continue to be a factor on Saturday, as the Tigers descend upon Cleveland.
After quickly wrapping up its first-round series, Detroit had a chance to rest its bullpen, which will be impactful in game one with the visitors likely to lean on their pen. You can't say enough about this group of Tigers relievers. They didn't waste a terrific start by Tarik Skubal on Tuesday, giving up just three hits and a walk in four innings, and controlled a desperate Houston lineup for nine innings on Wednesday.
The bullpen has been terrific this season, especially during the Tigers' late-season rally, posting a 2.41 ERA over the last 30 days. I'm confident they'll continue to dominate against a Guardians lineup that struggled in the second half of the season, ranking 27th in wOBA (.295) and 23rd in wRC+ (93) with the sixth-lowest walk percentage (7.5%) and lowest hard-hit percentage (31.5%) in MLB.
I'm also bullish on the Tigers' bats, which have proven tough to shut down. Detroit has earned the "Gritty Tigers" nickname for good reason and should be up for the challenge against Tanner Bibee, who is 1-3 with a 5.28 ERA in six career appearances (30.2 IP) against the Tigers. The visitors rank 2nd in FanGraphs' clutch rating over the last two weeks, trailing only the red-hot New York Mets. I expect more timely hits in game one, resulting in a Tigers win!
