A couple of the league's best go head to head on Sunday afternoon and when the smoke clears at the end of this one, we're expecting this total to fall below the posted number. Jason Hammel (7-3, 2.55 ERA) gets the call for the visitors, most recently he'd give up four runs off six hits over 5.2 innings in a loss to the Cards on Tuesday. Hammel had faced St. Louis twice before this year and gone 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA over 13 innings of work, but he'd finally have a letdown in this one. Hammel though has been particularly awesome in this position all season, going 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA on the road and 3-1 with a 2.50 ERA in all "day" games. The home side counters with ace Jose Fernandez (9-3, 2.36) who gave up one hit with two walks and seven K's over seven shutout frames in an unfortuante no-decision vs. Atlanta on Tuesday. Fernandez has now posted seven quality starts out of his last eight tries and his 125 K's in just 87.2 innings of work obviously ranks him among the best in the league. Not surprisingly, Fernandez has dominated at home this year, going 6-1 with a minuscule 1.78 ERA. All signs point to a classic pitchers duel this afternoon, play on the UNDER.
