This is a 10* EASTERN-CONFERENCE TOTAL OF THE MONTH on the UNDER betwen the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
We had a play on the UNDER in Game 1 of this series and then played the Capitals in Game 2 (we're now 1-1 in this series so far). After the massive eight goal combined outburst last time out (Pittsburgh 6-2 win, has a 2-0 series lead now heading back home), we're expecting a harder-hitting, more tightly-checked affair in Game 3, as the Capitals desperately try to shutdown the Pens explosive offense and get back into this series. Goaltender Braden Holtby had an outstanding regular season for the Capitals, but he had a very average series against the Leafs. Washington was tops on the defensive end in the regular season and if it has any hopes in resurrecting itself in this series, it's going to have to get back to doing what it does best. And that's playing aggressive, relentless defense and making the most of the opportunities when they present themsevles. The Pens have obviously also gotten extraordinary netminding from veteran Marc-Andre Fleury. So from an overall situational stand point, there's no question that this one sets up for what should be a lower-scoring UNDER. But also note that the numbers/trends also point to a low-scoring game, as Washington has seen the total go UNDER the number in two of its last three after a loss by two goals or more, while Pittsburgh has seen the total go UNDER the number in two of its last three after scoring six goals or more in its previous game.
