The boston Red Sox are finally back at Fenway after an exhausting 5-6 road trip and they're 7-3 in their last 10 home games following a road trip of seven or more days. Both teams had Monday off, but while the Red Sox are 4-0 in their last four games following an off day the Yankees are just 3-12 in their last 15 games following an off day.
Luis Severino (1-6, 6.02 ERA) takes the ball for the Bronx Bombers tonight. He'll make his first major leagues start since May 13, and even though he's pitched well out of the bullpen lately there's a reason why he was sent to the minors in mid-May. Severino was tagged with four runs on five hits with three homers in 6 2/3 innings in a loss to Boston on May 8 in just one of many disappointing outings that month.
The Red Sox turn to Rick Porcello (14-3, 3.46). Boston has won eight of the right-hander's last nine starts overall and Porcello owns a 10-0 record behind a 3.21 ERA in 11 starts at Fenway Park this season.
Boston is 2 1/2 games back of Baltimore and Toronto in the AL East, and they need to make the most of this six-game homestand before starting another extensive road trip. It's always iffy backing the home team on the run-line in baseball, but I think the Red Sox will take full advantage of Severino's struggles as a starter.
