Browns at Broncos
(NFL) Browns (CLE) vs. Broncos (DEN),
Point Spread: -6.00 | -115.00 Broncos (DEN) (Home)
Result: Win
A shrewd NFL historian might remind that the there is some history between these two teams beyond the epic AFC title games following the '86 & '87 (plus '89) campaigns. The second time the Broncos faced the Browns, way back in 1971, when Lou Saban didn't have to remind his team that then-Cleveland owner Art Modell had once said in pre-merger days that he "never wants the Denver Broncos" to play in the Browns' Cleveland Stadium. Using that as extra fuel, Saban's Broncos went out and dominated by a 27-0 count, holding Cleveland to a paltry 60 yards of offense. (it would be the last game Saban would win as Broncos HC prior to his resignation just over three weeks later). Unlike 1971, the venue is Denver tonight and the Browns likely do a bit better tonight but the momentum is still all with Denver, at 7-5 and in a position to further tighten the grip on a playoff spot in the AFC with pursuers like the Dolphins and Bengals having already lost this weekend. With Bo Nix apparently good to go after reports of a back injury late in last week's game vs. the Raiders, the spread has moved slightly upward over the weekend. Inconsistency has been the 3-8 Browns' theme no matter who the QB, as they haven't won or covered back-to-back games yet this season with either Deshaun Watson or (for the past month-plus) Jameis Winston.
